Ron Dennis To Wrestle Back Control of McLaren
Formula One

Ron Dennis is seeking to restore his position as majority shareholder of the McLaren Group after fellow shareholders have reportedly agreed to sell back their share bonds.

Dennis currently owns 25% of the McLaren Group, long time friend Mansour Ojjeh owns another 25% while the Bahrain Sovereign Wealth fund owns the remaining 50%.

According to Bernie Eccelstone the Bahrainis have sold their 50% stake to Dennis in a deal worth around £250 million pounds. Ecclestone recently revealed;

“They (the Bahrainis) are nothing to do with the race team any more. They have sold the shares to Ron,” said the 84-year-old Briton.

“He’s got to pay for them by a certain date. If he doesn’t pay, they will obviously take everything back again. But at the moment, Ron would own the company.”

Ecclestone is annoyingly right most of the time so if he says Ron is closing in on a deal then it will be so. Although nothing has been confirmed.

The McLaren Group is said to be worth close to £1bn, Dennis has an estimated personal fortune of between £90m and £300m. Dennis would need to take his current shareholding past 50% to become the dominant shareholder.

A McLaren spokesman said: “No transaction has taken place, but the shareholders have had discussions on how to best facilitate and enhance the future growth of the McLaren Group.

“When and if a transaction takes place, it is not envisioned that the current shareholders will exit McLaren completely, and announcements would be made at the appropriate time.”

Ron Dennis stepped down as the team Principle of the Formula One team in 2009 to concentrate on establishing McLaren Automotive only to retake the position this year after the F1 teams lackluster 2013 season.

Back at McLaren HQ there have been tensions between the shareholders who were disappointed at the initial performance of the supercar division.

However McLaren Automotive has gained traction and sales have improved but Dennis’ relationship with one of the board members hasn’t, his long time business partner Mansour Ojjeh.

Ojjeh and Dennis are at logger heads over the future direction of McLaren, if Dennis did gain 75% of the McLaren Group he would most probably force Ojjeh into selling his shares and effectively become a corporate dictator of McLaren.

Dennis is rich enough to walk away, but it seems he is as restless as ever a perfectionist and detailed individual who seeks to leave a personal legacy, for people like Dennis it isn’t just about the money its about closing the deal.
