When we reviewed the Golf GTE our reviewer said “it was like driving a corpse”. That part didn’t make it into the final edited version because we decided to tone things down… and probably no one at VW is reading this post so its OK to reveal it here. However VW is looking to inject some life into the Golf with a hardcore version that will make radioactive fallout look like a snow shower. If the 292bhp Golf R isn’t powerful enough for you then how about a 400bhp version, or the conveniently and rather modestly named R400. VW have confirmed the R400, which was unvield at the 2014 Shanghai Motorshow as a no holes barred concept, will become a no holes barred production hot hatch reality. The Golf R400 is expected to use a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder turbo engine which will actually produce 394bhp and 450Nm of torque. No other performance stats are given, but expect 0-62mph times to be sub 5 seconds. The Golf R400 is expected to debut this September at the 2015 Frankfurt Auto Show.
