Volkswagen Go Back To the Future With The Scirocco GTS
Auto News
Having sold over 1 million of the Scirocco’s since its Geneva Motor show over 4 decades ago, Volkswagen thought it was about time to resurrect a long thought extinct volcano. The Scirocco GTS. VW unveiled the Scirocco GTS at the 2015 Auto Shanghai Show in reminiscence of the 1982 GTS. Outside, 18-inch alloys are standard as well as optional 19-inch rims. You also get an R-Line “Exterieur” (or body kit to you and I) which comprises of R-Line bumpers, side sills, an R-Style spoiler and black mirror caps. On the inside you get a complete black and red overhaul which comes in the form of a black headliner, “Piano Black Lacquer” inlays and trim and sports seats and steering wheel with red contrast stitching. Expect ‘GTS’ badging both inside and out. Scirocco GTS Interior What’s on the options list? That depends where you live. The “Vienna” leather upholstery and panoramic sunroof are both optional for all markets, with the exception of China the latter kit comes as standard. Another option (yes, it’s standard in China) is the GTS decal which is two red stripes from the bonnet, over the roof and to the boot. It is worth noting that stripes are coloured black for red cars. Powering the new Scirocco GTS is a 2.0-litre TSI engine. For those of you who may not be accustomed to VW’s engine naming system, the GTS uses a turbocharged direct injection petrol unit. Just like the Scirocco R, the GTS has its power driven through the front wheels, but unlike the 280 PS R, the GTS has a mere 220 PS. Mated to either a 6-speed automatic DSG or manual transmission, it can get to 62 mph in 6.5 seconds. Scirocco GTS Rear What about running costs? Not too bad. It emits 139 g/km or 148 g/km of CO2 for manual and automatic transmissions respectively, and efficiency comes in at a claimed 6.1 l/100km or 6.4 l/100km. That’s roughly 40 and 44 mpg. The Scirocco GTS will be launched at the end of May in Europe, the Chinese super-standard-equipment version will be launched later in the summer. VW have yet to confirm price details, they like to hold onto the publicity value for as long as possible.  Scirocco GTS Front
