Jenson Button Rules Out Podium Aspirations For McLaren Honda
Formula One

Jenson Button has reason to be realistic for his 2015 F1 campaign, a renewed partnership between McLaren Honda has proved difficult to resurrect, the glories of a past era are a distant memory. Honda’s return as an engine manufacturer has been plagued by reliability issues.

At the Canadian Grand Prix the McLaren Honda revival plan suffered yet more humiliation Button didn’t even participate in qualifying. While Alonso had better fortunes he would eventually retire midway through the race joining Button who had already retired sometime earlier.

It was a different story at the previous race the Monaco Grand Prix where Button finished in 8th place scoring the teams first points of the season. It seemed a corner had been turned.

Honda arrived at the Canadian Grand Prix with a series of engine upgrades although Alonso alluded that the upgrades were to focus on reliability and not an increase in horsepower. The weekend’s results were plain for all to see.

Commenting after the Canadian Grand Prix Alonso said, “All the developments I know are coming for future races make sense, so I can see positive signs. I think we need to be patient now, and we need to continue to work incredibly hard. Hopefully we’ve learned a lesson, and it’s better that all these problems are happening now, while we’re not yet competitive.”

Jenson Button is equally as resolute but realistic about the task McLaren Honda face this year and has ruled out challenging for a podium position. In a recent interview Button said “It is one team, not Honda and McLaren, McLaren chose to work with Honda and that is the way it is. We won’t get a podium this year but we have to do the work, or you don’t deserve a podium,”
