Red Bull Secure New Renault Engine Deal After Season of Discontent
Formula One
Despite Red Bull issuing threats of leaving the sport because of a lack of competitiveness the F1 outfit have finally managed to secure a new engine deal that will see them continuing to use a Renault power source. However the deal stipulates that the power units will be re-branded as Tag Heuer, makers of luxury mechanical watches.  Its a moment which has seen Red Bull eat humble pie, after becoming discontented with Renault for failing to deliver an engine that could match the Mercedes for power. Red Bull openly criticised Renault and threatened to terminate the engine supply deal early. There were rumours Volkswagen were about to sign an engine deal with Red Bull but VW’s self inflicted emissions-scandal-wound all but ended that pathway. Red Bull were still insistent on discarding Renault and opened negotiations with other engine suppliers. Mercedes, Honda and Ferrari eventually said no which left Red Bull back-tracking to Renault like a bear on a rusty unicycle. Ilmor Engineering, who have designed and developed engines within F1 and Indycar, is the British company Red Bull have chosen to partner with for 2016. Ilmor already have a consultant based role with the team. This week Renault confirmed what had been known for some time, that they will be making a works team return to the sport after completing a deal to take over Lotus F1. Tag Heuer’s involvement with Red Bull is the most interesting aspect, the company is owned by a McLaren shareholder and the deal to join Red Bull ends a 31 year association with McLaren. Tag Heuer’s former was owner was Mansour Ojjeh who also has a 25 percent share holding of the McLaren Group. It is well known that Ojjeh has fallen out with Ron Dennis. The removal of Tag Heuer ends a lucrative sponsorship deal, but it may well be an attempt to be seen as a vote of no confidence in Dennis’s management of the F1 team.  Red-Bull-Richard-The-Third
