Saab Re-energised After Securing $12 Billion Dollar Deal
Industry News
Saab has been out of the headlines after dominating them when it went bankrupt not so long ago. A quick recap of Saab’s most recent fortunes read like this, struggling owners GM sold off the company in 2010 to Spyker Cars. Spyker themselves were struggled after GM vetoed a proposed sale to a Chinese company. Saab petitioned for bankruptcy by 2011 and by 2012 Saab was sold to National Electric Vehicle Sweden, a Swedish holding company funded by Chinese money. Production initially resumed by December 2013. However Saab went bankrupt, NEVS lost its license to manufacture cars under the Saab brand name and since 2014 Saab’s production plant has remained closed. NEVS goal was always to turn Saab into a maker of electric cars. That goal has now been realised with the announcement that NEVS will supply 150,000 electric cars to Panda New Energy, a Chinese leasing firm.  As of this point, NEVS has not re-acquired the rights to use the Saab name. A company spokesperson for NEVS said hundreds of new jobs would be created in Sweden. Saab’s assets will live on, it isn’t clear if NEVS will make an attempt to regain the brand license or re-brand Saab into NEVS. NEVS will provide Panda with an electric fleet based on the 9-3 saloon by the end of 2020.  Saab-Logo
