A Maserati SUV is not in the DNA of the company’s long and often mixed fortunes, it is a maker of luxury sports cars. But times change and business objectives are always the primary driving force.
The Levante will be given an official premiere at next month’s Geneva Motorshow, production has already begun and sales will begin later this year.
AWD technology is expected to feature but Maserati has hinted that the levante will have off-road capabilities which will also combine on-road handling attributes. It’s kind of like an Italian Range Rover Sport.
The engine range is expected to be derived from the Ghibli saloon so expect to see a 3.0litre V6 turbo-diesel and a 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine versions.
Naturally a performance version is in the making but no official details have been released. Neither has Maserati revealed how much the Levante will cost.
What we do know so far is that all models will have as standard AWD, electronic controlled air-sprung and damping suspension and an 8-speed auto transmission.
