Fernando Alonso May Quit F1 After 2017
Formula One
With the 2016 winter test schedule over no one can be certain who has the fastest car until the chequered flag is waved to mark the end of the first race in Australia on March 20th. The winter test times did at least provide some useful snippets of data. Aggregate times show that Ferrari ended the Barcelona test with the fastest overall time of 1:22.765 posted by Kimi Raikkonen with team Vettel second. Nico Rosberg was third overall a mere 0.257 tenths behind closely shadowed by the Force India of Nico Hulkenberg in 4th. However Mercedes covered more miles than any other team followed by Torro Rosso and Ferrari. So what this means is that winter testing has not provided a definitive answer on really who has the quickest car. What is known is that Mercedes may well have been taking testing easier than most, perhaps preferring to gain data than and optimise their car rather than grabbing the headlines. The outcome of the 2016 winter test perhaps mirrors Fernando Alonso’s current state of thinking. In an interview with a Spanish TV station Alonso declared he wasn’t certain if he would remain in F1 beyond 2017. Alonso’s contract McLaren Honda contract expires at the end of 2017 but it isn’t the performance of the car that is of primary concern to him. Alsono isn’t happy with the current state of F1 in general. “The cars are too slow, they’ve taken all the joy out of driving… I still have a few years left at the top level, two more at least and then I’ll see what my body says” said Alonso. Alonso will wait to see how competitive the 2017 cars will become when new regulations come into force. “I’m curious to see what the cars will be like in 2017, I’ll get into one and then think about the future.” “I don’t know what I’m going to do after 30 years at the wheel, but when I stop, it’s over, no turning back”. “Before that, I’d like to do Le Mans and go back to karting, which I’ve always loved.”  Fernando-Alonso-Serious
