E63-vs-M5--E-Motion
Is The Mercedes E63 AMG The Default Supercar Saloon?
Features
The BMW M5 has always been something of a benchmark supercar saloon, for both speed and performance. And it seems that Mercedes has always lagged behind somewhat. Mercedes have the E63 AMG to do some damage limitation but is it enough to put the BMW M5 on the back foot? The E63 AMG is no slouch, under the the bonnet (hood) is a 5.5-litre twinturbo V8 that generates 557bhp and 720Nm of torque. This power enables the E63 to dispatch 0-62mph in 4.4 seconds and also to reach a limited top speed of 155mph. E63-vs-M5-E-Rear Some say that in the looks department Mercedes finally styled a car that really can go head-to-toe with an M5 and win simply by standing still. Actually neither one is a looker to be honest. But that’s not the point of them. Its all about the power ballad. By comparison The BMW M5 is actually down on power, it too has a twinturbo V8 which pumps out 560bhp and 680 Nm of torque. E63-vs-M5-5-Front However the optional competition package boosts the M5’s engine too 575bhp which means a 0-62mph time of  4.2 seconds, again the top speed is limited to 155mph. The E63 features a good, old-fashioned hydraulic steering with some reviews favouring the latter over the M5’s electronic steering.   Despite the AMG arm trying to insert a more driver focused experience Mercedes have never been able to topple the M5 when it comes to pure handling dynamics. Indeed no other supercar-saloon has ever come close has, BMW really has nailed the image of the M5 to such an extent that it is never a surprise how improved each generation becomes. However the E63 AMG is about 100 kg lighter than the M5. Carrying less weight through the corners will improve the handling. But again it will not be a M5 killer. E63-vs-M5-5-Rear The M5’s secret weapon is not technology or digital integration, its always been about the attention to detail and the overall packaging. The key secret BMW uses is simply by creating a car with 50:50 weight distribution which is one reason why the M5 continually excels. Mercedes do have a trick up their sleeves and the Bridgestone Turanza ER300 types fitted to the E63 AMG are developed both for road and track use. The Mercedes E63 AMG does have a new mechanical diff on the rear axle. A differential allows allows each of the driving wheels to rotate at different speeds. In other words a differential lets you have those side ways moments. Mercedes always want the E63 AMG to offer a genuine sports car experience, it’s a analogue car with a digital heart. Whether it can score an unequivocal victory over its old M5 adversary is still open to debate. So that brings us to the real question which one should you go for the AMG E63 or the BMW M5? Don’t go for either one because BMW are soon to launch the next generation 5 Series and therefore a new M5 will 12 months later. Mercedes have just launched the new E Class and the next AMG model is also sure to follow soon. We recommend that you save your money and waste it on the next generation of supercar saloons from “der fatherland”.  E63-vs-M5--E-Motion
