Mitsubishi Admits To Overstating Fuel Economy Data
Industry News
You know when the brochure says the car will do 72mpg and in reality it only returns 40mpg? Well there is a reason why this anomaly occurs and it’s very simple. The figures have been manipulated, falsified if you will, overstated. It’s all false. It turns out Volkswagen are not the only motoring manufacture who like to deliberately falsify data. This time Mitsubishi has fallen on its sword and like VW the situation is of it’s own making. It’s a serious enough offence for Japanese officials to carry out a raid on Mitsubishi’s HQ after senior corporate executives admitted to falsifying fuel economy data figures. Japanese officials estimate that employees overstated economy data figures for more than 600,000 vehicles sold to unwitting consumers in Japan. Mitsubishi has until April 27th to respond by allowing authorities gain full access to internal data reports and testing. The models affected were sold in Japan only and affect around 157,000 Mitsubishi cars and a further 468,000 cars which were made for Nissan under a joint alliance. Most of the cars manufactured and sold were mini cars with 600cc petrol engines which are very popular in Japan. As a result Mitsubishi saw it’s share price slashed by 20 percent overnight. The cost of rectifying the affected cars is expected to be in the hundreds of millions. Mitsubishi are still trying to regain public confidence after a series of defects hit the brand hard during the early 2000s. Mitsubishi are not the only company who have falsified economy figures. In 2014 Hyundai and Kia also admitted to falsifying mpg figures and were fined by US authorities to the tune of $350m.  Bowing-In-Shame
