Demand For BMW Electric & Hybrid Cars Fall
Industry News
BMW rarely puts a foot wrong but even this annoyingly good maker of cars can never win over every consumer. As demand for Tesla electric cars has grown BMW has seen a drop in demand for it’s home grown brand of i-cars. To add further misery key executives involved in the development of the groups electric car division have left the company to join a Chinese based electric-car start-up. During a press briefing at it’s HQ BMW revealed the drop in demand affected sales of the i3 electric citycar and the i8 plug-in hybrid. BMW assert that the fall was due in part to the German government delaying incentives to encourage people to buy electric cars. The German government planned to offer consumers a 4,000 euro subsidy for electric car buyers and a 3,000 euro subsidy for buyers of plug-in hybrid cars. In the mean time BMW revealed it sold 5,100 ‘i’ cars during the first quarter of 2016 which represents a 27 percent drop from this time last year. BMW also believe consumers were waiting for the upgraded i3 90Ah which features a larger battery that increases range by up to 50 percent. Equatable to a 186 miles on a single charge. BMW also revealed the i3 and i8 will remain low volume and that the lightweight materials and technologies developed will filter down into higher volume production cars. Of the four mutinous staff BMW reassured the markets that there will be enough boots to fill the vacant positions in it’s the electric car division. In the mean time the i8 coupe will be joined by the i8 roadster later this year. Next on the list will be the development of the iNext which will be a Tesla Model X rival. The iNext won’t be available until around 2020.  BMW-i3-i8-Sales-Fall
