The Ford Fiesta is Europe’s best selling supermini with 84k units sold in the first quarter of 2016. Next up is the VW Polo at 81k units sold thus far and then its the Renault Clio with 77k units sold during Q1. In Europe the supermini reigns supreme its by far the most popular vehicle segment, the bread and butter for automotive manufactures. By the end of 2016 supermini sales will have reached a predicted five-year high of 3.2 million units sold however industry analysts predict that supermini sales will decline by the start of 2017. The reason being is that a new generation of sub-compact SUV’s will enter the market. So far this year sub-compact / mini SUV sales have grown 27 percent, 1 million mini SUVs were sold during 2015. A significant increase in comparison to 2011 when just 168,000 units were sold. But the supermini of what ever automotive brand isn’t finished just yet. Manufactures are planning to offer a new generation of models with more space and move the inevitable move upmarket. Another way to sustain sales is by offering higher spec and higher performance variants a ploy Ford has used with some success for the Fiesta. The Ford ST, a mini performance variant of the Fiesta is said to account for around 17 percent of total Fiesta European sales and Ford is considering t add a premium Fiesta to the model roster. Popularity of the supermini in the UK has helped the Fiesta sustain its overall lead in its segment and place it as the second most popular car on sale in Europe, behind the VW Golf. Germany is Europe’s largest car buying market and superminis account for around 14 percent of sales compared to 29 percent in France. Superminis are particularly popular right now in Greece which has the highest share overall during the Q1 period of 2016. But offering higer spec models will only stem the flow before the pressure of mini SUV demand bursts the dam.
