I don’t understand how a compact is car “a perfect vehicle for the whole family” but if Mercedes really does believe that then we’re totally cuckoo for Coco Pops. The previous generation Mercedes B Class, let’s be honest here, was as desirable as contracting Ebola. The all-new B Class still doesn’t cut it in terms of the external styling, but to be fair to them the Mercedes designers have nailed the interior.
So what is the new compact MPV Mercedes B Class about? it’s about… a little bit bigger than its rival, the rubbish BMW 2 Series Active Tourer.
At launch, the new Mercedes B Class will be offered with a choice of 5 engines, two petrol, and three diesels.
The petrol engines will range from between 134bhp and 161bhp. The diesel engines will be offered in 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre engine options. The later will be available in two power derivatives.
Mercedes say that the new B Class will have improved ride and handling. Customers will have numerous options to upgrade the ride and handling including electronic dampers.
No manual transmission will be offered. Its a choice of either a 7 or 8-speed automatic depending on options and or model trim.
But it’s the digital interior that has us very interested in the new Mercedes B Class. For Mercedes the analog instrument panel is finally dead, digital is now standard across the range.
Entry-level cars will be offered a standard 7.0-inch display. Higher model specifications will be offered with a 10.25-inch display as standard.
As with all 2018 spec cars standard equipment will feature an array of multimedia functionalities such as smartphone integration, voice and gesture control etc.
Also included are a number of driver assists such as Lane Guidance Control, and semi-autonomous driving among an array of other exotic technologies.
Expect a price bump from the previous generation. Prices for the current B Class start at £22k so expect to pay around £1k extra when you place an order.
Order books for the new Mercedes B Class will open in December.
