Ares Design Plot To Reinvent The Original Ferrari 250 GTO For Today
Auto News

Ares Design, the Modena based coachbuilder, is planning to create a limited edition Ferrari based on the F12 or 812 Superfast. Either Ferrari will act as a donor car, supplied by the client. The goal is to create a modern classic based on a vintage classic. The Ferrari 250 GTO. This is, to say the least, a formidable task.

The Ferrari 250 GTO was built from 1962 to 1964 for homologation into the FIA’s Group 3 Grand Touring Car series. The V12 powered car had a displacement of 2.9-litres. Power was rated at 296bhp and 294Nm of torque. A lot of power in the 1960’s. Only 36 cars were ever made, in the 1960’s each one sold for $18,000 that’s around £143,000 in today’s money. In June 2018 a 1964 Ferrari 250 GTO sold for a record £70 million. In our opinion, you should leave the original 250 GTO to automotive history and admire it for what it was and what it is today. But Ares Design doesn’t think so.  Ares Design CEO, Dany Bahar, says his company’s proposed concept is “…a modern reinterpretation, not a copy,” Bahr reckons that if he approves this reinterpretation then the company will likely build just 10 examples. Ares Design, Ferrari 250 GTO, reinvention, side view, dailycarblog.com Bahr is the former CEO of Lotus cars, before that he was a marketing guru for Ferrari. His skills in marketing are masterful. Often Bahr will use show-stopping concepts and or proposals as publicity stunts to gain… free publicity through the media or press. In this case, Bahr’s intention may well be to create a flow of more business by sucker-punching the gullible media with these concept sketches. And he has done it again. He knows Ferrari’s trademark’s better than most, after all, he used to work for them. And he may also be aware that Ferrari could issue a cease and desist order. So whether Ares Design actually goes ahead with creating a new 250 GTO based on these concepts is not certain. We know one thing at least. Bahr has created what he intended… publicity.
