Back From The Dead Ford Puma Wins What Car? Car of The Year Award… What, the what now?
Auto News

When we – here at DCB HQ – read What Car? had awarded the Ford Puma with the car of the year accolade we all nearly choked on our morning coffee break. We always tend to sip our coffee in perfect synchronicity. The Ford Puma is a sub-compact Fiesta SUV in all but name. Apparently, the Puma won because of its affordability, it’s fun to drive and it’s cleverly packaged. We’ve had this view – for a long time – that Ford is… for want of a better word… Ford is weird.

Ford is one of those automotive institutions that every motoring journalist is required to pay homage to. In the UK they have this crappy warehouse full of crappy old Fords and every motoring journalist who visits this crap filled warehouse has to feign genuine interest. It’s like being held, hostage.

I remember the days of Ford in their prime, they were crappy then and they will forever remain crappy. Modern-day Ford’s are less crappy I will admit to that. But this award will not make me buy a Ford any more than Lewis Hamilton winning his 7th or 8th F1 world title will make me go out and buy a Mercedes.

Admittedly I can’t afford either one, I can barely afford the bus into work, I am a motoring journalist after all. We do read What Car? on a daily basis, a fine bunch of journalists, excellent impartiality. But have their minds been warped by the weird, vindictive tenacity of Ford?

No. Not at all. But why does Ford always gain positive press when in reality Ford is… the Daily Car Blog of car manufactures, an accolade no one desires.
