Unseasonal snow and falling temperatures caused a sheet of ice to form as unsuspecting motorists were unintentionally involved in a 54 car pile up on the Chicago inbound Kennedy Expressway at North Avenue. Local Chicago news media reported that 54 cars in total were written off as a result of the pile-up.
Police closed the expressway for few hours to prioritise recovery, first responders and clean up crews, 14 people were taken to hospital with minor injuries.
