The “blingification” of Mercedes has resulted in a mandated safety recall in the USA. The federal NHTSA has found a bizarre issue with the GLS and GLE pertaining to the optional illuminated Benz badge. According to the NHTSA, the blinged up illuminated logo has been incorrectly wired and this is causing/could cause other components to fail.
Turns out the “other components” include vital functions such as the power steering, the wiper motor, and left headlight. Obviously, these components are critical to basic road safety. The models affected are the GLS & GLE 350, 450 and 580. The recall involves 12,799 vehicles.
Owners are being asked to visit their local Mercedes dealer, the fix is apparently simple and will involve the relocation of the ground connection. Owners will be contacted in due course. There are no reports of accidents or injuries in relation to this defect.
However, it just affirms our belief here at DCB HQ that Mercedes standards and quality control have been sliding for years.
