Well this is interesting, it’s the Toyota Aygo X which in and of itself used to be a portmanteau of Citroen and Peugeot. It’s gone from city car to micro SUV urban mobster preparing for a just around the corner Mad Max style utopian future, five minutes away from the local pub. Small city cars do not sell in huge numbers, but for some reason car manufacturers honestly believe that tiny-tot city cars will one day become the norm. Such a scenario will never come to pass because big city dwellers like nothing better than taking the underground train network, head down, staring at their fellow passenger’s shoes.
The Aygo X shares its underpinnings with the Yaris and the Yaris Cross. The Toyota GA-B platform is wider and longer than the last generation. In the Aygo X the new platform bumps up the boot space by 9cm or 60-litres. It also allows an increase of interior space by as much as makes little difference. On the outside the front overhang is shorter than the Yaris, making the Aygo X ideal for easy parking, says Toyota.
The Aygo X will be powered by a 3-cylinder, 1.0-litre engine that outputs a depressing 71bhp. The engine is synced to either a 5-speed manual or CVT transmission. The interior is fairly basic, but you do have a 9-inch infotainment system with AppleCar Play or Android Auto at your disposal. Presumably heating and climate control won’t be optional extras.
Toyota is hoping you are willing to pay at least £14K for entry-level models. Don’t be surprised if a performance version is built sometime later. Which is pointless if your main driving route is in a city/urban environment.
