Understanding The Aero Philosophy Behind The Ferrari F1-F75
Formula One

Ferrari unveiled their 2022 campaign car for the forthcoming Formula 1 season on February 17. The Ferrari F1-75 has certainly grabbed the attention of the media and fans for its striking looks. However, the F1-75 is not designed to look good for publicity shots, be it static or action. The 2022 regulations are largely centered on aerodynamics. Aero engineers have focused on how to control and direct airflow from the front nose endplate all the way to the rear of the car.

While Mercedes has opted for a tightly packaged aero surface, Ferrari has remained somewhat traditional because of the F1-75’s square sidepods. The sidepods feature channels to direct the airflow, in addition to sidepod louvers, cutouts, that are designed to expel hot air exhausted by the engine.

Having trench-like air channels sculpted into sidepods may well cause more aerodynamic turbulence than computer sims can anticipate. It is difficult to say if Ferrari has any real advantage,

Indeed, The Scuderia sacrificed the 2021 season in order to work on the 2022 car. Former Mercedes aerodynamicist and YouTuber KYLE.ENGINEERS takes a detailed look at the Ferrari F1-75.
