Formula One’s off-season has been loaded with rumors and unconfirmed rumors. As is often the case. Thankfully the start of the 2023 F1 season is nearing, but March 5th still seems like a lifetime away for impatient fans. Pre-season testing will take place in Bahrain ahead of the first which will also be in Bahrain. Testing has become significantly limited compared to past seasons. A tightening of the rules permits just two days of testing. Twenty years ago pre-season testing and in-season testing was virtually unlimited.
Today, teams have access to powerful software tools that can replicate physical testing. The wealthier teams will have access to wind tunnels, and therefore virtual testing is unlimited. However, computer data can never replicate real-world testing, as Mercedes found discovered throughout a painful 2022.
Pre-season car launches are really publicity tools for the sponsors. Race trim spec cars will actually be revealed at the first race, never the at the launch, this is to hide any advantage and minimize potential replication of aero-parts.
