From a casual smartphone hobby to a full-fledged passion, Belgian photographer Nico who showcases his results on his Instagram feed @Nicography77 utilizes a Nikon camera setup for capturing 1:64 scale model cars. His trusty equipment includes the Nikon D5600 paired with the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-140 mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR lens.

Initially, he constructs a miniature display complete with model landscapes. Subsequently, he strategically positions this display within real-world landscapes, skillfully integrating the model cars into the scenery to achieve a seamless and natural appearance.

The creation of these displays demands a high level of craftsmanship and artistry. Nico says, “For this I use, for example, carving foam, textured paints and static grass for the base.”

Certainly, post-processing plays a role in his work. Nico predominantly achieves his distinctive special effects organically, employing an array of tools and techniques. “I use compressed air, smoke or fireworks to bring the images to life,” says Nico.

His editing software tools primarily serve to overlay various elements or adjust colours. The overarching aim remains to faithfully depict scenes in the most realistic manner possible. However, he derives immense enjoyment from creatively unleashing his imagination, particularly in orchestrating staged car races with model cars.

Nico’s number one tip: “It’s important that the actual size of the subject is not apparent. Shooting from realistic distances is therefore of great importance. And even after three years, I’m still learning new things and experimenting a lot.”
