The Maserati Gran Cabrio EV is Simply Not Good Enough, Avoid It Like The Plague
Auto News

If you’re considering the switch to an electric Maserati Gran Cabrio sports car, forget about being swayed by its sleek design, luxurious features, or brand history. When it comes to electric vehicles of any make, there’s one key factor that reigns supreme: impressive range. We’ve witnessed the nascent stages of the electric car era, and in the past five years, technology has made significant strides—especially in battery and efficiency advancements—with further progress on the horizon.

Meanwhile, the traditional piston-powered gasoline engine has hit its peak. Despite incremental improvements in efficiency and power delivery, it’s clear that development has stagnated. This is underscored by the proliferation of hybrid powertrains and combustion engine-assisted EVs, which only serve to supplement electric battery charging.

So, the shift towards electric isn’t solely driven by environmental concerns; from a technical standpoint, electric vehicle powertrains simply outshine their combustion engine counterparts. While challenges like improving charging infrastructure persist, the real hurdle lies in convincing consumers that the pure electric Maserati Gran Cabrio Folgore justifies its £185,000 price tag. Spoiler alert: it doesn’t.

The only aspect that piques my interest in the electric Maserati Gran Cabrio Folgore is its range—I expect a standard of 350 miles based on current tech trends. However, with Maserati relying on Pandemic Peugeot for electric powertrains, the Gran Cabrio Folgore already seems cursed. The touted 751 bhp means nothing when the Gran Cabrio struggles to cover 200 miles on a full charge.

Why shell out £185,000 for the Folgore when you can purchase a pre-owned Gran Cabrio and convert it to electric power for less? Maserati can keep their Folgore; I’d rather invest £86K in an entry-level Porsche Taycan—a true electric car engineered from the ground up to be an… electric car.

In short, steer clear of the Maserati Gran Cabrio Folgore; it’s a technical debacle masquerading behind heritage and brand allure.
