Testing Times: Next Gen Honda Passport Trailsport Goes AWOL
Auto News

We initially thought the Honda Passport TrailSport was an AI-generated name, but apparently, real marketing people came up with it using actual human brain power. Anyway, Honda of America is preparing to launch a redesigned Passport mid-size SUV, with the upcoming TrailSport variant promising to be a strong contender for off-road enthusiasts. It sounds all rather confusing… anyway…

The Japanese automaker first teased the TrailSport’s more aggressive design earlier this summer, revealing a muscular front end in a teaser image. Now, Honda has released additional images and a video showcasing more of the SUV’s rugged styling and capabilities.

The new Passport TrailSport features a boxier silhouette than its predecessor, with upright front and rear sections, a flat hood, and larger grille openings. Although the camouflage partially conceals the details, glimpses of sharp amber daytime running lights and durable-looking seven-spoke wheels are visible.

Under the hood, the TrailSport will come equipped with a “new” and “more powerful” version of the 3.5-liter V-6 engine, likely an updated iteration of the current 280-hp unit. It will also feature a 10-speed automatic transmission and Honda’s torque-vectoring i-VTM4 all-wheel-drive system.

Honda has been testing the Passport TrailSport in various environments, including the rocky terrain of Moab, the sand dunes of western Michigan, and the forested trails of Appalachia.

The company wants the main feature image to underscore the SUV’s durability and off-road capabilities, positioning it as a reliable companion for outdoor adventures.

The 2026 Honda Passport and Passport TrailSport are expected to debut this fall, with sales beginning in early 2025.
