Volvo Leads Charge For EU To Maintain 2035 Net Zero Mandate
Industry News

Volvo, along with a coalition of 50 companies, has urged the European Union to maintain its net zero plan to phase out new combustion-engine cars by 2035, emphasizing the need for electrification to meet climate goals.

While Volvo’s CEO, Jim Rowan, supports the 2035 target, major automakers like Volkswagen, BMW, and Stellantis have stayed silent.

Despite backing from companies like Rivian, Uber, and IKEA, the EU’s emissions targets face criticism due to declining EV sales and industry challenges, with Volkswagen even considering factory closures.

Italy has also opposed the target, seeking a review and advocating for biofuel exemptions, while critics warn that Europe risks falling behind China in EV production.
