Lando Norris Approaches 2025 With Less Hubris And More Focus
Formula One

Lando Norris once claimed that Lewis Hamilton’s record-breaking wins and championships were due to having the fastest car. In 2024, Norris himself had the fastest car for most of the season and is regarded as the fastest, most complete driver of his generation. However, tasked with winning the 2024 world championship, Norris fell short of the lofty expectations—and perhaps his own high opinion of himself. Ultimately, having the fastest car and being one of the top talents of a new generation is meaningless without a championship-winning mentality.

Norris’s typically ebullient demeanour has been replaced by the sobering reality that his peers are now scrutinizing his performances. The questions are not about his speed or commitment but his ability to maintain a competitive mindset under pressure.

After a bruising 2024 season, Norris seems to be approaching 2025 armed with a sense of self-doubt. Yet in a recent podcast interview, he insisted he was proud of how he performed under pressure.

Interestingly, Norris admitted he struggles with confidence, though that insecurity has rarely surfaced on the track, where he consistently delivers high-level performances. From the very start of his F1 career, Norris demonstrated exceptional pace.

But when his moment arrived to go head-to-head with Verstappen, he played a straight bat when he should have knocked Verstappen for a six (to borrow a cricket analogy).

The only way to deal with Verstappen is to draw a line in the sand and show you’re willing to cross it. Norris has the speed and machinery to win a championship; what he needs now is self-belief. If he does have a weakness it is a desire to openly discuss his lack of confidence, a strategic mistake—one that savvy competitors will exploit.
