Lotus Announces Second Round of UK Job Cuts Amid US Tariffs And Market Shifts
Industry News

Lotus Cars is set to cut nearly 470 jobs in the UK — its second major round of layoffs in six months — as part of a restructuring aimed at boosting competitiveness and ensuring long-term sustainability. The cuts will primarily affect the Hethel plant near Norwich, while other UK sites remain unaffected.

The decision follows halted US shipments of the Emira sports car due to a 25% import tariff imposed by former President Trump, which has disrupted global automotive trade. Lotus is also facing challenges from a 145% tariff on Chinese EVs, forcing a steep price hike for its Eletre SUV in the US market.

Despite the setbacks, Lotus says it remains committed to its UK operations and heritage, and plans to deepen collaboration with parent company Geely for greater efficiency in engineering and operations. However, the company must now rapidly adapt to a fragmented global market and shifting consumer demand.
