Geely To Launch in UK Market With Electric EX5 SUV
Industry News

Chinese automaker Geely has announced the launch of its namesake brand in the UK, with its first model — the electric EX5 SUV — set to go on sale in the fourth quarter of this year. The vehicle is currently undergoing “intensive development work” to meet the expectations of British consumers, according to a company statement.

Geely says the EX5 will be the first in a “diverse range of high-quality, accessible vehicles” tailored specifically for the UK market. The move marks the latest push by Chinese automakers into Britain’s EV sector, joining brands such as BYD, Chery’s Omoda and Jaecoo, and Xpeng.

The UK, now Europe’s largest market for electric vehicles, remains open to Chinese-made EVs, unlike the European Union, which has imposed tariffs on such imports.

The EX5 is also slated for launch in other international markets, including Australia, Brazil, and Poland. While this marks Geely’s first direct foray into the UK under its own name, its affiliated brands — Volvo, Lotus, and Polestar — already have an established presence in the country.

The entry-level Geely EX5 will feature a 60.2kWh battery, delivering a real-world range of around 220 miles. It supports 100kW rapid charging, enabling a 30 to 80 percent top-up in just 20 minutes. Powered by a front-mounted 215bhp electric motor, the EX5 accelerates from 0 to 62mph in 6.9 seconds.

In 2023, Geely’s global vehicle sales surged by 34%, reaching nearly 2.2 million units.
