EV Slowdown Forces Porsche Pivot: All-New Gas-Powered SUV In The Works
Industry News

Porsche discontinued the original gas-powered Macan in Europe in 2024 due to new GSR2 safety regulations, although it’s still on sale in non-GSR2 markets until production ends in 2026. While the electric Macan will carry the nameplate forward, Porsche has confirmed plans for a new combustion-powered SUV—a response to slower-than-expected EV adoption.

Announced during the H1 2025 earnings call, CEO Oliver Blume said the new model will debut in 2028, promising it will be a “very, very typical Porsche,” distinct from the electric Macan.

Developed at accelerated speed, the SUV is expected to use VW Group’s Premium Platform Combustion (PPC), likely sharing its foundation with the latest Audi Q5—which offers a mix of four-cylinder engines, hybrids, and a V6 mild-hybrid in the SQ5.

While the new crossover will compete in the same segment as the Macan, it won’t carry the Macan name, which will be reserved solely for the electric version. Porsche initially bet heavily on EVs, but shifting market realities have prompted a pivot back to internal combustion—with hybrid options likely included.
