According to YouTube channel “Under The Bonnet,” there are 17 cars in 2025 you should avoid buying new due to catastrophic reliability issues. Problems range from engines failing at 40,000 km to transmissions costing thousands to replace. Notable offenders include the Fiat 500X and Nissan Juke (timing chain and CVT failures), Citroën C4 Picasso (gearbox and DPF issues), and Range Rover Evoque and BMW X1 (engine and drivetrain failures).

Other problematic models include the Opel Crossland (engine belt failures), Mercedes A-Class (head gaskets and dual-clutch transmissions), Volkswagen T-Roc (DSG failures), Ford Kuga PHEV (battery fire risk), and Alfa Romeo Giulia (electrical and transmission issues). Renault Captur, Peugeot 2008, Jaguar E-Pace, and Jeep Compass also suffer from severe engine, gearbox, and electronics problems.

The most dangerous and costly vehicles highlighted are the Nissan Qashqai e-Power, Mercedes GLA, and Range Rover Velar, which combine high repair costs, frequent breakdowns, and rapid depreciation. Data from DEKRA and TÜV confirm these cars have some of the worst reliability ratings in Europe.

Mechanics warn that repairs on many of these models are so complex or frequent that some refuse to work on them. Potential buyers are advised to review the list carefully before purchasing in 2025 to avoid expensive, frustrating ownership experiences.
