Over A Third of Category N Vehicles Scrapped Unnecessarily, Says Report
Features

New industry research shows that 34.9% of Category N (CAT N) vehicles written off in 2025 could have been repaired using modern SMART (Small to Medium Area Repair Technique) methods, rather than being scrapped.

Of the 262,339 CAT N vehicles last year, 91,556 were deemed beyond economical repair by insurers despite only having minor cosmetic damage that could be fixed quickly and cost-effectively.

Insurance companies often prefer to write off damaged vehicles rather than pay for repairs, a practice that significantly reduces resale value—repaired Category N cars can be worth up to 50% less than equivalent undamaged models and are harder to insure.

Industry analysis highlighted that many insurers overestimate repair costs, availability of parts, and damage severity.

With 250+ IMI-accredited technicians across 50+ franchises, the company offers fully mobile SMART repairs, often performed on-site within hours, avoiding the need for courtesy cars or traditional body shop downtime.

The report underscores the financial and environmental inefficiency of current insurance practices and points to SMART repairs as a cost-effective alternative for both insurers and vehicle owners.
