Shaping the Future: McLaren Automotive Appoints Kemal Curić As Chief Design Officer
Features

Only a car designer can go from shaping the design language of the Ford Kuga to sketching the lines of the next generation of McLaren road cars. That rather unusual accolade belongs to Bosnian-born Kemal Curić, who joins McLaren from Ford Motor Company.

Curić most recently served as Global Design Director for Performance Vehicles, overseeing elements of Ford Europe’s “kinetic” design era. As a failed designer turned failed writer myself, I can tell you that being able to draw well is merely the baseline for becoming a car designer.

To succeed in this field, you have to be exceptional—and then raise your level again when it comes to executing a design vision, taking it from the mind’s eye to paper, to clay model, and ultimately to the finished product. Nevertheless, Kemal could still use some style advice.

It’s all in the details

At first glance, it’s clear that his clothing is tailored to fit his “enhanced” physique. He’s opted for a modern cut, but the hemline is a little too short. When it comes to suits, it’s always better to go for a classic cut, as it remains timeless.

In Kemal’s case, the blazer length unfortunately gives the impression of a Moss Bros suit, which is a shame because the cut, shoulders, and lapels are otherwise classic. Then he undermines it with one of those stiff, upturned-collar shirts that were popular in the mid-2000s.

Again, when pairing a formal shirt with a blazer, a timeless cutaway collar is always the better choice. And never wear chinos with a suit or blazer—always pair them with proper trousers.

He simply needs to fine-tune his attire. The shirt sleeves appear too long, likely because the blazer sleeves are slightly too short.

Given that he’s probably earning between £500k and £1M a year, he can easily afford to visit Turnbull & Asser and invest in a few made-to-measure shirts to suit his physique. They also produce tailored suits.

As for suits, Anthony Sinclair is a personal favourite.

In any case, Mr Curić, we look forward to seeing the vision you bring to McLaren Automotive.

… does he actually read the Daily car Blog?
