Volkswagen ID Polo GTI - A Reality Check
Pay More Get Less: The Overpriced Volkswagen ID Polo GTI
Video

We’ll leave it to Autogefühl to ramble and pontificate about the new Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI — an overpriced hot hatch EV with a price tag absurd enough to set fire to the rain. VW chose to unveil this inflation-fuelled fantasy at the Nürburgring 24 Hours, but at a rumoured €40,000, it’s the kind of car that will have Dacia Duster owners laughing themselves unconscious.

With just 220hp and 290Nm of torque, the only thing remotely “hot” about the VW ID. Polo GTI is the asking price. Beyond that, it’s all badge, marketing, and nostalgia bait.

Meanwhile, China is pumping out EVs with better tech, better specs, better build quality, and often at less than half the price. Against that backdrop, it’s hard to imagine many sane buyers choosing the ID. Polo GTI.

Still, there’ll always be a few gullible diehards willing to cling to the outdated fantasy that “German engineering” automatically means superiority. Volkswagen is clearly betting those people still exist.

Yes, the lower-spec versions will probably be cheaper, but even then Volkswagen is being outclassed by Chinese manufacturers on price, technology, innovation, and value.

The VW ID. Polo GTI perfectly captures everything going wrong with European car manufacturing right now: inflated prices, mediocre performance, endless marketing hype, and a staggering disconnect from reality. To me, this car doesn’t represent progress — it represents decline.
