Lewis Hamilton produced a masterclass at the Barcelona Grand Prix, securing his first victory for Ferrari and ending Mercedes’ unbeaten run in the 2026 Formula One season. The seven-time World Champion crossed the line ahead of fellow Britons George Russell and Lando Norris, creating the first all-British podium in Formula One since 1968.
Starting on soft tyres, Hamilton was unable to challenge for the lead on the opening lap, but Ferrari’s strategic gamble soon began to pay dividends. The Scuderia opted for an aggressive three-stop strategy, a decision that proved decisive when a Virtual Safety Car period handed Hamilton a crucial free pit stop.

From there, the Briton was untouchable. Producing a series of blisteringly quick laps, Hamilton steadily extended his advantage over the pursuing Mercedes cars and controlled the race to the chequered flag. The victory marked his first Grand Prix win in almost two years and significantly reduced the championship deficit to standings leader Kimi Antonelli.
Russell fought hard to secure second place, although his afternoon was far from straightforward. The Mercedes driver briefly lost position to team-mate Antonelli during the closing stages before the Italian’s race ended in heartbreak. Antonelli suffered a mechanical failure on Lap 62 of 66 while running strongly, turning a potential podium into a costly retirement.
Norris completed the podium for McLaren in third, continuing his consistent run of form and helping secure a memorable day for British motorsport.
Red Bull endured a mixed afternoon. Max Verstappen extracted the maximum from his package to finish fourth, while team-mate Isack Hadjar could only manage sixth. Splitting the two Red Bulls was McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, whose fifth-place finish delivered valuable points for the reigning Constructors’ Champions.
Pierre Gasly enjoyed one of his strongest performances of the season for Alpine, claiming seventh place after a clean and competitive drive. Behind him, a post-race ten-second penalty for Franco Colapinto dropped the Argentine from eighth to tenth, promoting Racing Bulls pair Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad into eighth and ninth respectively.

Further down the order, Gabriel Bortoleto and Carlos Sainz narrowly missed out on points in 11th and 12th. Esteban Ocon and Sergio Perez were the final classified finishers, while Alex Albon endured a difficult afternoon and was not classified after spending much of the race several laps behind following repairs to his Williams.
The race was also notable for an unusually high attrition rate. Seven drivers failed to reach the finish, with mechanical problems proving costly throughout the field. Alongside Antonelli, one of the biggest disappointments was Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, whose late retirement denied the Italian team the possibility of a double podium.
Aston Martin suffered a miserable home event as both Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso retired before the finish. Cadillac chose to withdraw Valtteri Bottas’ car as a precaution, while Nico Hülkenberg’s promising points challenge ended prematurely with technical issues for Audi. Haas also lost Ollie Bearman in the closing stages.

Hamilton’s triumph not only delivered Ferrari a landmark victory but also injected fresh intrigue into the championship battle. With Antonelli failing to score and Mercedes’ winning streak finally broken, the momentum appears to have shifted as the 2026 season enters its next phase.
