2026 Spanish Grand Prix - Qualifying Report
The Great Reset: George Russell Regains Momentum With Spanish GP Pole
Formula One

George Russell delivered a stunning performance to secure pole position for the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, leading a Mercedes front-row lockout after a dramatic and closely contested qualifying session.

After a difficult weekend in Monaco, Russell bounced back in style, setting a sensational lap of 1m 14.679s to claim his third pole position of the season.

The Briton looked competitive throughout qualifying and produced his best when it mattered most, edging out team-mate Lewis Hamilton in the final moments of Q3.

Hamilton also enjoyed one of his strongest qualifying performances of the year, vaulting onto the front row with a late improvement that demoted rookie sensation Kimi Antonelli to third. The Italian had impressed throughout the session but ultimately recorded his lowest Grand Prix qualifying position to date.

Lando Norris secured fourth place for McLaren, while Max Verstappen could only manage fifth ahead of Racing Bulls driver Isack Hadjar. Oscar Piastri qualified seventh, with Liam Lawson and Nico Hulkenberg producing eye-catching performances to take eighth and ninth respectively.

The biggest disappointment came for Charles Leclerc. The Ferrari driver had been among the frontrunners all session before crashing heavily into the barriers early in Q3. Unable to continue, Leclerc failed to set a lap time and will start tenth on the grid.

Arvid Lindblad narrowly missed out on Q3 in eleventh after reporting a loss of deployment at Turn 1, while Gabriel Bortoleto, Franco Colapinto and Pierre Gasly completed the top 14.

Fernando Alonso endured a difficult home qualifying session, ending the day at the back of the grid alongside Aston Martin team-mate Lance Stroll.
