New BMW CEO Pulls Out of Paris Motor Show As Cost-Cutting Takes Priority
Industry News

BMW has confirmed it will not attend this year’s Paris Motor Show, as new CEO Milan Nedeljkovic focuses on reducing costs following a major profit warning. The automaker said its decision to withdraw from the October event was made due to a “shift in priorities,” while adding that it will continue to participate selectively in future automotive shows.

The move marks a significant change for BMW, which has frequently used major international motor shows to reveal important new models and technologies. The brand previously chose Paris as the stage for the global debut of the seventh-generation 3 Series in 2018 and returned to the 2024 event with new Mini launches and its Neue Klasse electric vehicle concepts.

BMW’s decision comes as the company faces growing financial pressure. A recent profit warning highlighted weaker demand in China and the impact of geopolitical uncertainty, prompting the manufacturer to accelerate a cost-cutting programme. BMW is also investing heavily in its next-generation electric vehicle range, built around the Neue Klasse platform.

The timing is particularly notable as the Paris show prepares for a stronger manufacturer presence, with brands including Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Renault, Dacia, Alpine, Fiat, Lancia, Opel and Volkswagen expected to attend.

Chinese manufacturers are also set to play a major role, with companies such as BYD, Xpeng, Geely, Changan and Leapmotor showcasing their latest vehicles. Their growing influence in Europe, particularly in the plug-in hybrid and electric vehicle markets, has increased pressure on established European brands.

BMW’s absence gives rivals a larger opportunity to capture attention, but the company’s strategy suggests it is prioritising long-term investment and financial stability over traditional motor show appearances.
