Geely-Horse Partnership Unleashes A 1,113bhp Hybrid Powertrain
Industry News

Horse Powertrain has unveiled a hybrid drivetrain that could redefine what a plug-in hybrid is capable of. The new 3DHT200 packs 13 major components into a single system and will make its debut in the forthcoming Geely Galaxy Cruiser 700, an imposing off-road SUV producing up to 1,113bhp.

Developed by Horse, the joint venture between Geely and Renault, the 3DHT200 combines a three-speed dedicated-hybrid transmission with two electric motors. A 110kW P1 motor starts the combustion engine and generates electricity, while a much more powerful 230kW P3 motor provides the main electric propulsion.

Its party trick is versatility. The system can operate as a pure EV, in series-hybrid mode or as a parallel hybrid. Around town and at low speeds, it can behave much like a range-extender, with the engine primarily generating electricity. At higher speeds, the drivetrain can switch to direct mechanical propulsion through the three-speed transmission.

For off-road driving, however, the numbers become particularly impressive. Horse claims up to 4,920Nm of wheel torque and the ability to tackle gradients as steep as 45 degrees. In the Cruiser 700, the front drivetrain is supplemented by a rear electric motor to create an e-4WD system.

Horse has also focused heavily on packaging. The 13-in-1 architecture integrates the motors, controllers, charger, converters, thermal-management hardware and transmission components, reducing overall unit volume by 10 percent.

A redesigned permanent-magnet motor architecture increases torque density by 15 percent and power density by 20 percent, while the P3 motor can spin beyond 20,000rpm.

Horse claims the system can propel vehicles from 0–100km/h in around three seconds while delivering consumption of roughly 5L/100km in large SUVs. If those figures translate into production, the 3DHT200 could make hybrid power surprisingly compelling for both speed and serious off-road capability.
