George Russell has admitted he is no longer realistically in contention for the 2026 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship after Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli secured his eighth win of the season in Madrid.

Russell finished fifth at the Spanish Grand Prix, leaving him 81 points behind Antonelli in the championship. The Briton had topped first practice but could only qualify sixth before a difficult race strategy limited his chances of fighting further up the order.

Mercedes opted for a two-stop approach, bringing Russell in for mediums during the Virtual Safety Car before switching him to hard tyres. Russell questioned the first pit call over team radio, but later conceded that the outcome was unlikely to have been significantly different.

Russell explained:

“Realistically, I’m not in the fight for the drivers’ title. That just allows me to focus race by race and try to get some good results.”

“It has been a more positive couple of races, even though the result was far from great today. But it’s kind of the story of the season. I just need to focus on the performance, keep trying to help the team. You know, we’re obviously in a great place to win the Constructors’.”

The result leaves Russell second in the standings, but his ambitions have shifted towards helping Mercedes secure the Constructors’ Championship.

Antonelli, meanwhile, has strengthened his grip on the championship after backing up his victory at Monza with another win in Spain.

Russell has taken only two victories this season and now heads to Baku facing a steep challenge to close the gap.

For the Mercedes driver, the priority is increasingly clear: maximise his own results and help the team convert its strong season into Constructors’ Championship success.
