Some restoration projects involve polishing a classic car until it looks like it has never seen rain. Others involve taking a 64-year-old Kenworth, dragging it into a workshop and asking: “Right, how much of this thing still works?”

Wrecker Rick and the Murphys Diesel crew have chosen the latter.

Their latest project is a 1962 Kenworth with more history than most modern trucks have miles. During its working life, it delivered seven brand-new cars to families across Arizona, turning an old lorry into a small but memorable part of several American families’ stories.

Now the truck is getting another chance on the road.

The restoration involves everything from mechanical repairs and electrical work to custom fabrication. And when the crew discovered that some parts simply aren’t available anymore, they did the sensible thing: they made them.

The electrical system has also been upgraded, including a more powerful alternator capable of supporting a modern mini-split air-conditioning system. Inside, 4 State Trucks seats bring some welcome 21st-century comfort, while custom barnwood flooring gives the cab a suitably handcrafted feel.

The aim isn’t to erase the truck’s character. It’s to preserve it while making the old Kenworth usable again.

And judging by the amount of welding involved, this is going to be one hell of a comeback.
