The BMW X5 has been hauling families, luggage and corporate egos around since 1999. Now, the fifth-generation SUV is getting a thoroughly modern makeover, with Neue Klasse technology, a fresh design and more powertrain choices than your average supermarket has milk.
For UK buyers, the headline act is the all-electric BMW iX5 60 xDrive. Its 141kWh battery promises up to 525 miles of range, while 460kW DC charging means less time plugged in and more time contemplating the price of electricity. Power stands at 578bhp, delivered through two electric motors.

Not ready to abandon the combustion engine? BMW has you covered. The X5 40d brings a 313bhp six-cylinder diesel with mild-hybrid assistance, while the plug-in hybrid X5 50e combines petrol and electric power with up to 63 miles of electric range.

Then there’s the rather muscular X5 M60e xDrive. With 612bhp and 800Nm of torque, it reaches 62mph in just 4.5 seconds. That’s properly rapid for something with the proportions of a small country.

Inside, a new panoramic display system, optional passenger screen and premium materials bring a technological overhaul. Prices start at £85,375 for the electric iX5, rising to £101,775 for the M60e.
Built in Spartanburg, USA, the new X5 arrives in UK showrooms in spring 2027. Subtle it isn’t, but versatility has rarely looked this ambitious.
