Fernando Alonso will continue his remarkable Formula 1 career into 2027 after deciding to remain with Aston Martin for another season.
The two-time World Champion, who will turn 46 next year, had taken time to consider his future following a difficult 2026 campaign for Aston Martin. The team currently sits 10th in the Constructors’ Championship, while struggles with performance and reliability have raised questions over whether Alonso would remain motivated to continue.
However, after discussions with team owner Lawrence Stroll and Team Principal Adrian Newey, Alonso concluded that he was not ready to walk away from Formula 1.
“I still feel competitive and I feel that fire inside when I’m at the race weekend – I feel happier,” Alonso said. “If I’m sitting on the couch, watching F1 will be very difficult for me at the moment because I feel the need of being behind the wheel. The moment didn’t arrive yet.”
Alonso also admitted that his previous decision to leave Formula 1 after the 2018 season has influenced his thinking. A two-year absence before returning in 2021 has made him reluctant to walk away while he still feels capable of competing at the highest level.
His decision represents a significant show of faith in Aston Martin’s long-term project, particularly the influence of Newey. Although there is no guarantee the team will produce a front-running car in 2027, Alonso has chosen to commit himself to the challenge.
He will once again line up alongside Lance Stroll, giving Aston Martin an unchanged driver pairing for the 2027 season.
