Rafael Camara will make his Formula 1 race debut at his home Sao Paulo Grand Prix this weekend after Haas confirmed that Esteban Ocon will not return to the team’s race seat this season.
The decision follows a turbulent Mexican Grand Prix weekend, during which tensions between Ocon and his race engineer, Laura Mueller, reportedly escalated following a disagreement over tyre choices and the team’s practice programme.
Haas subsequently replaced the Frenchman with Toyota driver Ryo Hirakawa for the Mexico City race. The Japanese driver impressed on his debut, eventually securing a championship point following post-race penalties for rival competitors.
However, relations between Ocon and the team have not improved, prompting Haas to make the change permanent for the remainder of the season.
Team principal Ayao Komatsu confirmed the decision, stating that the team believed it was in its best interests moving forward. He added that discussions surrounding Ocon’s departure would remain private.
Camara, a Ferrari Driver Academy prospect and current Formula 2 championship leader, will now partner Ollie Bearman at Interlagos.
The Brazilian has already been confirmed as a Haas driver for 2027, making this weekend an opportunity to gain valuable experience ahead of his full-time arrival.
The youngster previously impressed during a Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) outing in August, giving Haas confidence in his ability to step up.
His debut at his home race represents a significant milestone, although the pressure of Formula 1 competition will provide a considerably tougher test.
