Lotus Brings Back V8 Power With 1,000hp Type 135 Hybrid Supercar
Auto News

A couple of years ago, Lotus had a plan, and the plan was simple—go electric, go bold, go silent. Now? No. Now there’s going to be a mid-engine V8 hybrid supercar instead. Because apparently silence is overrated and Lotus has remembered it quite likes the sound of engines.

This new machine, currently called the Type 135, is due in 2028 and marks the first time in 24 years that Lotus has put a V8 in anything. That alone tells you this isn’t a cautious corporate exercise. This is more of a “hold my tea, we’ve had an idea” situation.

It also signals a pretty significant u-turn: Lotus is no longer chasing full electrification by 2028. Instead, it’s now embracing a “multi-pathway strategy,” which is corporate speak for “we’re doing everything and seeing what sticks.”

Underneath, the Type 135, which will be based on the Type 1 concept car, is expected to use a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 from Mercedes-AMG, paired with a hybrid system. Combined output? Over 1,000 horsepower. Which, in old money, is “a lot.” Enough to rearrange your internal organs if you’re not paying attention.

Styling-wise, it’s being developed with clear nods to the Esprit—so expect wedge-like aggression, big aero, and enough diffuser to qualify as garden furniture. There’ll also be a large rear wing, because subtlety is not on the options list.

It’s being designed in Coventry and likely built in Hethel, alongside the Emira and Evija, which is quite a family reunion: one petrol, one electric, and one that can apparently argue with both.

Inside, Lotus promises a “racing-inspired” cabin, which usually translates to: fewer buttons, more focus, and seats that remind you you’re not supposed to be comfortable, you’re supposed to be fast.

So yes—Lotus is back in the V8 business. Quiet phase over. Noise very much resumed.
