The Bugatti Destrier: A Bolide In A Dinner Jacket
Auto News

Bugatti has taken one of the most unhinged cars ever built, removed some of its aerodynamic anger, wrapped it in entirely new bodywork and somehow made it look even more expensive. Meet the Destrier.

The third one-off created through Bugatti’s Solitaire Programme, the Destrier is essentially a Bolide turned into a rolling sculpture. Its carbon-fibre monocoque remains, as does the frankly ridiculous 1,578bhp W16, but the visual recipe has changed dramatically.

The C-line now pauses before the front wheel before carrying on, the horseshoe grille is wider and the rear wing is smoothly integrated into the bodywork. The result is less “Le Mans escapee” and more “French aristocrat who happens to own a rocket”.

Bugatti says the shape takes inspiration from the legendary Type 57G and 57C Tank racers and the Type 57SC Atlantic. And while that might sound like corporate heritage bingo, the influence is surprisingly convincing. The Destrier has a flowing, almost delicate silhouette that hides an outrageous amount of mechanical violence underneath.

Then there’s the paint. Sapphire Celeste is unique to this car, with a diamond-like sparkle and matching tinted carbon fibre.

Inside, things get properly lavish: Ambre Voyageur leather and nubuck, haute-couture inspired 3-D knitted textile and hammered metal details inspired by medieval armour.

It even has a tiny French flag.

The Destrier will make its public debut at Monterey Car Week before appearing at Pebble Beach on 16 August. Somewhere, a knight’s horse is feeling seriously inadequate.
