Honda And Nissan Agree To Standardise Software Architecture
Industry News

Nissan and Honda have signed a joint development agreement to standardise key electronic control units (ECUs) and software for their next generation of software-defined vehicles (SDVs), with deployment planned from fiscal 2029.

The agreement will cover the in-vehicle operating system, middleware and vehicle-control software. The two manufacturers will establish common specifications for high-performance main ECUs using systems-on-chip technology, as well as zone ECUs designed to manage different areas of a vehicle.

The resulting electrical and electronic architecture is expected to be integrated into both companies’ SDV platforms, creating a common technological foundation while allowing Nissan and Honda to continue developing vehicles independently.

The collaboration forms part of a broader strategic partnership between the Japanese manufacturers, which is focused on carbon neutrality and the goal of eliminating traffic fatalities across their respective vehicle fleets.

For both companies, software development has become an increasingly important area of investment as vehicles incorporate greater levels of connectivity, automation and digital functionality. Standardising core technology could allow Nissan and Honda to reduce duplicated development costs while accelerating the deployment of new software capabilities.

The agreement also reflects a wider shift within the automotive industry, where manufacturers are increasingly seeking partnerships to manage the cost and complexity of software-defined vehicles.

Neither Nissan nor Honda disclosed the expected investment associated with the programme. The companies have also not confirmed whether the shared architecture could eventually be made available to other manufacturers.

The agreement nevertheless represents a significant step towards closer technological cooperation between two major Japanese automakers, while potentially giving both companies a more cost-efficient foundation for their future vehicle platforms.
