At just 20 years old, Kimi Antonelli is standing on the brink of Formula 1 greatness.
The Mercedes driver currently leads the 2026 World Championship and, while the title remains mathematically open, his commanding points advantage has put him within touching distance of his maiden crown.
It would be a remarkable achievement for a driver who made his F1 debut only last season.
Antonelli strengthened his championship position with victory at the Spanish Grand Prix at the Madring, patiently waiting behind Charles Leclerc before the Ferrari driver made his mandatory pit stop on a circuit where overtaking proved difficult.
It was Antonelli’s eighth Grand Prix victory of the season. Yet none have carried quite the same emotion as Monza.
In front of his home crowd, Antonelli became the first Italian in 66 years to win the Italian Grand Prix, leading Mercedes to a one-two finish after a thrilling battle with teammate George Russell.
The Tifosi may have arrived draped in Ferrari colours, but they celebrated Antonelli as their newest Italian racing hero. That connection has inevitably fuelled speculation over a future move to Ferrari.
Rumours have suggested the Scuderia offered Mercedes as much as $90 million for their young star. Antonelli has repeatedly insisted he intends to remain with Mercedes, while team principal Toto Wolff maintains that his contract is “watertight”.
Wolff has also made his feelings clear: if Ferrari wanted Antonelli, they should have taken their opportunity years ago.
Mercedes brought Antonelli into its junior programme in 2019, when he was just 12, before promoting him directly to its F1 team in 2025.
Now, that faith is being repaid with victories and a championship challenge. During a recent media interview Antonelli discussed the speculation:
“I don’t rule anything out, but the goal is to win as much as possible with Mercedes.”
I’m fine where I am. I’m very happy to be in Mercedes, also because I feel I owe them a debt for all the opportunities they have given me.”
“They were the ones who believed in me when I was only 12 years old. They have accompanied me on this path of growth.”
“I hope to achieve many successes with them in the future. Then we will see.”
