Max Verstappen is back at the front of the Formula 1 grid. The Red Bull driver delivered a commanding performance in qualifying for the Bahrain Grand Prix, securing his first pole position of 2026 with a blistering lap of 1:35.130.
Verstappen had topped both Q1 and Q2 before producing his decisive final effort, finishing 0.298 seconds clear of Lewis Hamilton.

Isack Hadjar appeared set for second place until Hamilton split the Red Bull and Ferrari challenge, with Hadjar eventually taking third. However, a five-place grid penalty means his starting position will be considerably lower on race day.
Kimi Antonelli qualified fourth, ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, while McLaren secured sixth and seventh with Lando Norris leading Oscar Piastri. George Russell completed the top eight.
There was encouragement for Aston Martin, with Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll qualifying 12th and 14th respectively. At the other end of the field, Liam Lawson’s power-unit change leaves him facing a back-of-the-grid start.
With several penalties still to be applied, the final grid promises to look very different. Verstappen, however, has given himself the perfect platform for a return to victory.
