Apparently, according to Autocar — the world’s most traditional, flag-waving, jingoistic flag-waver since Tommy Robinson — the new Jaguar Type 01 is “hotly anticipated.”
I don’t know about you, but I must be the only person in the media who doesn’t smoke weed. Nobody is hotly anticipating the Jaguar Type 01, because few people bought Jaguars in the first place, and even fewer will buy the Type 01.
Indeed few people bought Jaguars when Jaguar was actually making cars people wanted to buy, and somehow we are now expected to believe that the answer is to build one enormous, expensive electric car and pray that the world queues around the block for it.
Jaguar looked at the entire automotive industry, looked at its customers, looked at the market, looked at its declining sales — and apparently decided: Sod it. We’ll start again.
So, what is the Type 01?
It is, in effect, Jaguar’s coffin. A swan song. The final reckoning. Out of the fire and… until nothing is left but the ashes.
According to Sun Tzu, the definition of evil is to burn down the nation in order to rule over the ashes. But Jaguar executives have gone one step beyond that definition of evil: there will be no ashes left to rule over.
Yes, Jaguar executives decided to stop making volume cars in order to shift towards electric vehicles. But unlike other manufacturers, who decided to gradually transition from ICE cars to EVs, Jaguar decided to end it all and start again.
In other words, they really did burn down the nation to rule over the ashes.
With the launch of the Type 01, Jaguar hopes — they don’t believe; they cling to pure, unverified hope — that the Type 01 will kick-start an EV sales revolution.
But had they actually paid attention to consumer trends instead of licking their fingers and sticking them in the air, they might have noticed that consumer demand is increasingly shifting towards hybrids and plug-in hybrids.
WHOOPS!
And how exactly do you replace more than 100,000 sales a year with just one model while simultaneously moving from a premium to a luxury brand? I’m not an expert, but I’m not dumb either.
And the mathematics of this do not require a PhD from MIT.
The Jaguar Type 01 isn’t the start of a new electric era. It marks the end. The final farewell. The final nail in Jaguar’s delapidated coffin.
