Teams Face Critical Tyre Selection For United States Grand Prix
Formula One

Pirelli has confirmed its tyre compound selection for the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA), with the C2 Hard, C3 Medium and C4 Soft tyres selected for the race weekend.

The Austin event opens Formula 1’s American triple-header, which continues in Mexico City before concluding in São Paulo.

Unlike last year, the 2026 weekend returns to the traditional format without a Sprint, giving teams three practice sessions to optimise car balance and tyre performance.

The 5.513-kilometre circuit combines high-speed corners, rapid direction changes and slower sections requiring strong traction.

These characteristics place considerable demands on both axles, with front tyres particularly stressed through the opening sector and rear tyres facing increased thermal degradation during acceleration out of slower corners.

Although the asphalt is not especially abrasive, ageing surfaces across much of the circuit contribute to significant tyre wear.

A section between Turns 9 and 11 was resurfaced earlier this year, but managing degradation is expected to remain a key strategic challenge.

The selection of the C2 Hard compound could encourage longer stints and support a one-stop strategy. However, typically high temperatures in Texas may increase degradation and prompt teams to consider alternative approaches.

Last year, 13 drivers adopted a Medium-to-Soft strategy, while Charles Leclerc secured third place after starting on Soft tyres.

Austin has hosted 13 editions of the United States Grand Prix, part of a wider history spanning 46 races across six circuits.

Lewis Hamilton holds the record for the most victories at COTA, with six wins, while Ferrari leads the constructors’ standings in the race’s history with 11 victories.
