Tesla Improve Roadster’s Battery Range to Achieve 400 Miles
Auto News
Gasoline powered cars still rule when it comes to ultra-convenience, fossil fuels “pollute like hell” there is more stored energy in petrol than there is in the equivalent electric powered vehicle. To compound matters for electric car zealots, hydrogen cars are seemingly making a come back after years of “shall we or shan’t we”. Toyota will be the first car manufacturer to offer a Hydrogen car which only emits water vapor. If hydrogen powered cars do take off what happens to the electric car, will it lose the battle for sales and convenience in the same way it did nearly 100 years ago to gasoline age? Perhaps in a reaction to the Mirai Tesla have announced they have extended the range of the Roadster which has been boosted to a claimed 400 miles of range before requiring a recharge. Tesla CEO, Elon Musk revealed via Twitter the update would “enable non-stop travel from LA to SF (San Francisco)” Tesla officials confirmed “Battery technology has continued a steady improvement in recent years, as has our experience in optimizing total vehicle efficiency through Model S development,” an official Tesla spokesperson said.  We have long been excited to apply our learning back to our first vehicle, and are thrilled to do just that with the prototype Roadster 3.0 package.” Tesla has been able to make the new battery cells 31 percent more efficient than before, however, the use of low-resistance tyres and enhanced aerodynamics also play a critical role in the improvements say Tesla. To achieve the 400-mile target Tesla added: “There is a set of speeds and driving conditions where we can confidently drive the Roadster 3.0 over 400 miles.” Roughly translated this means you have to drive the roadster below the limits it can achieve, which means driving at an average pace. So why have an electric sports car if you can’t drive it to its limits and beyond is the real question. Tesla will demonstrate the improvements by driving from San Francisco too Los Angeles in January 2015. The date has yet to be confirmed.  Tesla-Roadster-400m
