Plucky little SEAT have revealed their mighty new warrior in the form of the Leon ST Cupra 280, the most powerful performance estate to leave the Spanish stables. SEAT’s super estate uses the same engine as found in the Leon Cupra Sport hatch and coupe versions and that means a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder engine, turbocharged engine which has an output of 280PS hence the 280 moniker. We reckon SEAT is taking PS because in old money 280PS represents 276bhp. Nevertheless the Leon ST Cupra produces 350Nm of torque from 1,700 to 5,600 rpm and can reach 0-60mph in a nifty 6.1 seconds and has an electronically a limited top speed of 155mph. The Leon ST Cupra also gets a mechanical front differential lock and what SEAT refer to as progressive steering and there is a choice of a six-speed DSG or manual transmission. Cupra Drive profile is a trio of driver modes that alter the engine and transmission maps, the three modes are named Comfort, Sport and Cupra. Basically the engine and transmission maps increase overall throttle and transmission response. On the outside cosmetic details include 19-inch wheels with a titanium paint finish, an Aerodynamic Pack with the spoiler on the rear roof edge, CUPRA lettering on the brake calipers and black door mirror housings. On the inside the LEON ST Cupra has a sports steering wheel with steering mounted paddle shifts for the optional DSG transmission. The sports seats are finished in black Alcantara with contrast white stitching. Other details include aluminum pedals and door sill plates. Standard equipment includes a 5.8 touchscreen system and ambient lighting. SEAT also offers optional White Line, Black Line and Orange Line packs. The surrounds of the radiator grille and door mirrors and parts of the two-tone aluminium wheels are painted in the respective colour – with the Orange Line standing for Cup Racer orange. But SEAT isn’t done wringing every last drop of money you have the additional and optional Sub8 Performance Pack’ includes larger Brembo brake calipers, specially-designed 19-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels in either black or orange and body-coloured side skirts. For £2,025 including VAT. Semi-slick Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres are available for £460. If you are worried about the tax implications then you will have little to fear, the C02 emissions are rated at 157g/km which equates to reasonable £180 of road tax per year. SEAT have gone into great detail about their new super estate but give very little detail about the price. And guess what, they will announce it at a later date when the car launches in March.
